After the thunderous announcement of Avowed, Obsidian Entertainment’s new baby, anticipation was running high. Promising a first-person RPG in a new universe, the title had everyone salivating. So, was it a successful gamble or a damp squib? Here’s our verdict after several hours’ play.
A Spicy Story
From the very first minutes, we’re plunged into the world of Eora, and more specifically into theLiving Lands, a mysterious and dangerous region. We play the role of an emissary sent to investigate a strange epidemic. The scenario, though classic in its development, manages to captivate us thanks to engaging characters and well-written dialogue. We also appreciate the many moral choices that really influence the adventure.
Gameplay: Same old, same old?
In terms of gameplay, we’re back to the mechanics that made Obsidian’s previous games so successful. The first-person combat system is dynamic and offers a good variety of weapons and skills. However, the animations are a little stiff and some confrontations lack polish. Exploration, meanwhile, is encouraged by the presence of numerous secrets and side quests.
Lifespan: Good value for money
Allow a good 30 hours to complete the main adventure, and 50 if you want to explore the world from top to bottom and complete all the side quests. Replayability is ensured by the presence of various choices that modify the course of the story and relationships with other characters.
Music and graphics: C’est Pas Encore Ça
While the artistic direction is rather successful, with varied environments and an immersive atmosphere, the same cannot be said of the graphics. The game lags a little behind technically, with textures that are sometimes droopy and visual effects that are outdated. As for the soundtrack, it’s rather subdued and doesn’t really stick in your memory.
A good RPG, but not a masterpiece
Avowed is a good RPG which, despite its shortcomings, manages to keep us entertained thanks to its gripping story, solid gameplay and substantial lifespan. However, it lacks polish in certain areas, notably graphics.
