Capcom, one of the world’s leading video game developers and publishers, has revealed Onimusha: Way of the Sword™. This action game is an all-new adventure in the acclaimed Onimusha™ game series. The first new installment in the series for nearly two decades, Onimusha: Way of the Sword takes players back to a dark, fantastical feudal Japan where samurai face supernatural enemies in fierce combat. Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be released worldwide in 2026 on PlayStation®5 (PS5®), Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam).
Onimusha is set in the Sengoku period, the legendary age of Japan’s warring states. The games blend history with Japanese folklore to tell the adventures of warriors who wield the mystical power of the Oni. These heroes are drawn into a conflict with the Genma, implacable monsters bent on world conquest. The saga debuted in 2001 and immediately captivated players with its dynamic sword fighting and exhilarating “Issen” counter-attack mechanics. The series was also recognized for its spellbinding stories featuring historical figures and real-life events in a dark fantasy setting. The Onimusha franchise, one of the most popular in the Capcom catalog, enters a new era with this new episode.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set in Kyoto at the beginning of the Edo period. In an era of relative peace for Japan, misfortune has befallen the ancient city. Transformed into a sinister and ominous place, Kyoto has been infested by the demonic Genma. In the first trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a lone samurai armed with the Oni gauntlet engages in bitter, bloody swordfights against these hellish creatures from another world.
