[MagicCon Barcelona] New maps and artwork for Doctor Who

The MagicCon Experience arrived in Barcelona and welcomed fans for an exciting weekend of panels and events on the main stage, including first glimpses of some fantastic upcoming expansions.

The event was held at the Fira Barcelona Gran Via, and the announcements began on the very first day. The announcement panel featured Gavin Verhey, Mark Rosewater and Ovidio Cartagena presenting artwork and maps from Doctor Who and the Wasteland of Eldraine, as well as a preview of the Forgotten Caverns of Ixalan expansion.

MAGIC: THE GATHERING – DOCTOR WHO™ (scheduled for release on October 13)

Our upcoming Infinite Universes expansion, Magic: The Gathering® – Doctor Who™ features four pre-built Commander decks, spanning 60 years of this iconic saga and allowing players to relive their favorite moments from the series and create their own unique memories.

These decks have been entirely designed to capture the essence of Doctor Who’s iconic characters and memorable stories. The Showcase TARDIS card frame and serialized Doctor cards that will be available in Collector’s Boosters make this expansion even more exciting for collectors among the universe’s biggest Doctor Who fans.

• The Journey into the Past deck retraces the early history of Doctor Who with the first eight Doctors. It is built around the Historical game mechanic and is controlled by the Fourth Doctor. Covering the series from 1963 to 1989, this deck features numerous legendary creatures, objects and stories.
• The Méli-mélo spatio-temporel deck is built around temporal manipulation and is controlled by the Tenth Doctor. Using cards with mechanics like Suspension, Disappearance and other time markers, the time travel mechanic lets you alter the flow of time by adding or removing time markers from your cards.
• The Paradoxical Power deck is built around the unexpected. Who knows what’s going to happen! With mechanics like Flashback, Bounce, Suspend, Track, and more, the paradox mechanic does special things when you cast your spells outside your hand.
• The Masters of Evil deck is designed to force your enemies to choose the lesser evil. Focused on Daleks, Masters and Cybermen, the villain choice mechanic forces each of your opponents to sacrifice a creature or let you create a Dalek 3/3 token with threat. It’s really sneaky!

The TARDIS is present in all Doctor Who boosters, with the exception of the Masters of Evil deck, and creates some truly wonderful and surprising moments. Collector’s boosters will be the only way to get your hands on the finest, rarest and most interesting versions of Doctor Who characters. Doctor serialized cards are limited to extremely small quantities depending on the Doctor represented on each card, with a minimum of 501 cards for each.

LES FRICHES D’ELDRAINE (scheduled for release on September 8)

Returning to the land of fairy tales and fantasy, Les Friches d’Eldraine will bring a touch of novelty by venturing beyond the castle walls and into the wastelands, a mysterious and vast region populated by mischievous fairies, witches with bubbling cauldrons and giants looming over the foliage.

This will be the first opportunity to see what the multiverse looks like after the failure of the Phyrexian invasion. Players will meet new and familiar faces throughout Eldraine and face the consequences of the invasion, including the destruction caused by the Phyrexians and the unforeseen repercussions of the resistance’s efforts.

The Wasteland of Eldraine takes place on a plane of existence plagued by the Evil Sleep, a curse orchestrated by the fairy monarch Talion and three powerful witch sisters. Originally intended to fight the Phyrexians, the enchantment has plunged many of Eldraine’s inhabitants into a deep sleep from which no one seems able to awaken…

Our boosters feature incredible fairytale characters and illustrations inspired by the classics of fantasy literature. We also offer something special for the enchanted world of Eldraine Wasteland with Enchanted Tales, which transpose the best enchantments in Magic history to the world of Eldraine.

LES CAVERNES OUBLIÉES D’IXALAN (due out November 17)

Fans attending MagicCon: Barcelona were also able to see the first illustrations created for The Forgotten Caverns of Ixalan, featuring some of the characters and dinosaurs that will feature in this forthcoming expansion. More information on this adventure-focused expansion will be revealed at MagicCon: Vegas, September 22-24.
